Municipal Water
If you receive municipal water, then the city is responsible for transporting the supply to your home. This is done through the city’s water system. However, you are responsible for the pipes on your personal property. These pipes deliver the water from the municipal water system. You will have to pay a monthly water bill to use this service. You may be required to do any maintenance or repair work on your property’s pipes when needed.
Most cities obtain their water from nearby rivers. The city ensures the safety of the water it delivers to your home by testing and treating it. Municipal water is safe because of the treatment. However some people do not always enjoy the taste and choose to filter it further.
If you choose to receive municipal water, you will also be able to use the city’s sewage lines. There may be a significant initial cost if your property doesn’t hook up to the city’s water and sewage lines. However, you should never lose access to your water supply should you do so, even if you lose power. Nor will you ever run out of water.
Well Water
When you choose to use well water as your water supply, you’ll need to build a well on your property. Although you won’t have to pay any monthly water bills, you will have to pay for your well to be drilled and built. There would also be a maintenance cost to consider.
There are a number of challenges to consider when building a well on your property. Depending on whether your property is located on low or high ground, your well may have to be drilled deeper. This will of course affect the initial cost. The higher up you are, the deeper you will need to drill.
Additionally, you will be responsible for treating the water. Although the water may taste fine, there may be bacteria and other elements present. This can make it risky to drink without treatment. You will also be responsible for testing and treating the water. A septic system will have to be built, which will need to be pumped regularly. You will also end up losing access to your water supply if you lose power or if your well runs dry.
Both municipal water and well water sources have their respective pros and cons. Deciding between municipal and well water as your supply will depend on a number of factors. You will also need to consider your specific wants and needs.
